Theology and Practice of Prayer:
A Lutheran View

Praying Hands - Albrecht Dürer

Reformation artist Albrecht Dürer probably sketched his own hands for this famous drawing in black ink on blue paper he made himself. The sketch was one of 18 sketches completed as preparations for painting an altarpiece ordered by Jakob Heller, which was to include a depiction of an apostle praying. The completed altarpiece was destroyed by fire hundreds of years later, though a copy of the altarpiece painted beforehand still exists today. (The image above is from Wikipedia.)

Why pray? What to pray? How to pray? We answered those and countless other questions about prayer in this Midweek Bible Study begun on the Wednesday of Pentecost XVI in 2012 and finished on the Wednesday of Pentecost IX in 2013. The class largely follows the November 2011 report from the LCMS Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR) titled Theology and Practice of Prayer: A Lutheran View, which, by following this link, you can either download as a PDF or order from Concordia Publishing House. The Synod’s President, the Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, has commended the report to us for study and consideration with his prayer that God will use it to lead us to remember and rejoice in the gift of prayer to our Father in heaven. We pray likewise for you, as you follow along with us Wednesday evenings onsite or anytime online, via the link to the document above and the class audio posted below.
